Big Blue Jumbo filter 'O' ring needed (takes 4½" x 10" filter)
« on: December 10, 2018, 11:29:00 AM »
Anyone got a spare they don't need or know where I can buy one? Changing my filter this weekend & my O ring seems to have stretched to the point it won't form any kind of an effective seal.

Quite how it would have stretched so far baffles me & makes me wonder if I'm missing something here.

TIA.

Do you know the O ring dimensions … I may have one that'll fit.

Julian,

Any help? It's stretched so far I can't get a meaningful measurement. It actually seems to have shrunk back a bit, I think it was slacker a couple of days ago.

Maybe the one with the ruler in tells you what you need to know. looks like about 142mm to me

I can probably measure mine with a vernier if I remember this evening.

That would help Tony.

I'd guess there's a bit of leeway in the OD, it's the cross sectional diameter that'll be more critical.

If you can't find one the right size, with care you can cut a section out of the old one and super glue it back together ... done this many times to resize O rings.

Mine might be different - it has two o-rings:

Both have a resting ID of ~80mm.  The top one has a cross section between 3.25-3.30mm and the bottom one 3.10-3.20mm.

The channels they rest in have different diameters that I can't get the caliper into, approx 86mm.  The rings are stretched to fit these, and the bottom channel has a slightly larger diameter than the top one.

If I was to speculate, I would guess that since the housing is imperial (10") that the o-rings are as well, perhaps 3 1/8" ID and 1/8" cross section.

As best as I can measure them, the biggest O rings I have are 110 x 5, 100 x 5 and 84 x 3.5.

I have my doubts that the 110mm dia will stretch to 142mm, but if you're passing, bring the housing and we can give it a try.

If you know the correct size, O rings are readily available in a massive range of sizes, but at the size you want they look to get stupidly expensive  … http://www.bearingshopuk.co.uk/orings-seals-clips/o-rings/?oring_int=22068

I'd try the cut and glue trick if it's just stretched … you've got nothing to loose.

Thanks everyone.

I didn't know you could cut & glue O rings. I'll try that first.

Make sure it's scrupulously clean.

Wash the O ring and blade in IPA or similar before cutting then leave the cuts as cut.  Line up carefully and hold together for way longer than you think may be necessary … good luck.
