Basically we come under HMRC's 179E https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/excise-notice-179e-biofuels-and-other-fuel-substitutes/excise-notice-179e-biofuels-and-other-fuel-substitutes#accounting-for-excise-duty

You are exempt and only pay duty if you go over 2500L per annum.

The two things to read

Section 4.2.1 Exempt producers or users .......covers the 2500L allowance.
section 4.2.4 Vegetable oil use ........exempt of duty if your under 2500L.

Hi SunJuice, I saw your same post on the Facebook group.

Didn't Mark Ross give you a comprehensive answer? no way could HMRC charge you duty twice on the DERV proportion . i can't understand why you seem so worrird about this.

Hi,

recently joined the forum to seek advice and share knowledge. It appears to be much less active now than back a few years ago.

Anyway, I've been blending WVO with DERV for over 10 years. My Sprinter burns 50/50 with no problems at all. What I am seeking is some clarification on "bioblends" as the HMRC term it. They seem to refer to a bioblend as rebated fuel (red) blended with biodiesel. I can't seem to find any clearer definition than this in 179e.

50/50 WVO/DERV is neither of the above. I easily fall under the sub 2,500 litre exemption rule but what if I was ever pulled to one side and dipped? Where do I stand legally? It's blended - yes but it aint biodiesel. It's WVO and it's not a rebated fuel. Duty has been paid. HMRC clearly state however, that a "bioblend" is liable for duty on the entire volume of blended fuel. It's clear as mud to me and I just want to get this strait before encouraging my two Landrover Defender friends that using such a blend as I do is a good idea.

I have searched the forum and found nothing that really touches upon this issue.

Chemistry and process / Re: Help! Reaction not happening.

It might have helped some.  I drained 2 gallons of discolored "syrup" off the bottom to save for later.  Then, I washed and dried it.  The end product is still cloudy and thicker than the normal biodiesel I've made.  I'm planning to just mix in about 10 gallons of it in the mercedes' 20 gallon tank.  Fortunately, it's summer, so the diesel engine should handle it.  My main car is a VW Golf TDI.  I'll try mixing about half of it in there and top it off with regular diesel.

Doing a 3/27 test or similar ie 10/90 will give you an indication of the purity of the biodiesel you have made. Even though you have hopefully forced your glycerol to drop by the addition of pure glycerine,  it is unlikely that you have reached anywhere near 100% reaction, hence your bio being more viscous than normal.

Look at the photo in this link, this shows a purity test where the failed sample has a veg oil residue at the bottom of the tube. As long as you mix your sample in the ratio 10/90 with methanol in a suitable measuring tube and shake well, then settle, the test will work.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I just ordered a couple gallons of glycerine to use as you have suggested.  I'm curious myself to see if it has any effect.

Any Luck?
